Queensland Railways Photographs Index

The Queensland section is thin, since I have not lived or travelled much within the state. However, there are a few relevant photos, and as I gather more material, this section will expand.

Check out the Queensland Railway Locomotives page for more information.

BB18.25 class

  • Image : dir=tourist/zigzag/ page=index 119102 bytes, 900x600 pixels
  • Date : 1990?, catalogued 22 Oct 2000
  • Photographer : Stewart Hughes
  • Medium : email digital image, image location ZigZag-6
  • Description : 4-6-2 ('Pacific'), express passenger engine. Built in 1956 at Walkers Ltd, Maryborough, Queensland. for c.45,665 pounds. These locomotives incorporated roller bearings and anti-vacuum brakes to prevent superheater elements burning when the locomotives were standing still. It was first based in Brisbane and later at Toowoomba, Queensland until it was taken out of service in 1970. Travelled 341,238 miles, a low mileage. It was bought by Zig Zag in 1975 and named 'City of Lithgow' in recognition of their financial and moral support. Also known as the 'Bety' after its telegraphic code. In service.

C17 class 4-8-0

One of the most versatile locomotive in Queensland, 227 were built 1920-1953 by a number of constructors. Taken out of service 1954-56. Final 40 known affectionately as the 'Brown Bombers'. Returned to service in May 2000. (taken from the Zig Zag Railway Page )

  • Medium : Kodachrome, slide number 16996
  • Description :
Well, I didn't write down any details of this loco when I took the photo, and originally published this image as Mystery-1 , with a plea for readers to write to me if they knew any details. Several readers did so (thanks to Roger Marsh, Graeme, Ed Slee and Mike Quirk), and the overall view is that it is C17 loco number 251. Large numbers of C17s were preserved throughout the state, reflecting the fact that 227 were built, and that they saw widespread use throughout the state. This example is at Townsville, and you can see Magnetic Island in the background.
Josh Whitney, from the Townsville and District SME (Steam Model Engineers?), wrote to say:
(I refer to) the picture on your webpage of Queensland Railways, the photo of C17 No. 251. The engine has since been move to the model engine park and now sits at the front in a dilapidated state it could do with a coat of paint. The mainline of the club travels around the engine.

Here are some recent photos of 720 with the first fire in her for over 35 years. We were only heating the boiler to help remove the scale and other crap including bits of garden hose, timber and birds nests. We have now done the first pressure test on the boiler to 100 psi. and apart from a few minor leaks the boiler seems to be fine. Hopefully and with luck we should have the loco running by mid 06.

I think this is loco 934 - it has it written on the plate on the boiler. Love the "beards" (and bellys) driving it!! A contrast in styles to the UK drivers!!! Apart from that I can tell you nothing about this loco. The photo was taken about 8 or 10 years ago.

  • Photographer : Stewart Hughes
  • Medium : email digital image, image location Kuranda-1
  • Description : Stewart thought this photo was taken at Kuranda in Qld in about 1984. William Kolln wrote pointing out several reasons for re-ascribing it as at Cairns:
I think it is Cairns Station. I saved the image to my computer and tried to blow it up a bit to see what was in the background on the left side of the photo. Unfortunately the resolution is too low.
From what I can see, there appears to be a car going across the lines and behind the car appears to be some large white storage petroleum tanks. If this is the case then it is Cairns Station as this photo is looking south towards the inlet where the petroleum tanks would have been before the whole area was changed.
Also, the tree frond behind the stock wagon on the right is appears to be what I know of as a fan palm. Cairns Station had two platforms; the No 1 or main platform had a ceiling just like is shown in this p
